Central Asia is one of my favourite places I had a chance to visit. It’s not only beautiful places, mountains and steppes, but also a land of hospitable and friendly people. It was my second visit to those countries and it was a much shorter visit this time – only a few days.

On this trip, I have visited Kazakhstan’s and Kyrgyzstan’s capitals: Astana (it was called like that at the time, until it was renamed for Nursultan recently) and Bishkek. Both cities are quite unconventional destinations. While Astana is more modern with a distinctive skyline, Bishkek still reminds me more of its Soviet past. Nevertheless, both places are interesting and worth a visit. Astana is located in a flat area – and is also the world’s second coldest capital city (after Ulaanbataar), while Bishkek is situated amongst the mountains.

Both countries have also unique cultures, especially their food. Central Asia is a place where you’ll be able to try various meats (especially horse meat being quite a popular delicacy there) flavoured in different spices. I’ve had a chance to try plov, kuurdak, beshbarmak and others. As I always, I came across some lovely people on this trip who made me feel welcome and tried to show me their amazing cultures in such a short time.
