3 of the best beaches in Mallorca: Caló des Moro, Cala s’Almunia and Ca’n Pastilla

Mallorca, or Majorca, is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean.

Like the other Balearic Islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain; it was used by 28 million passengers in 2017, with use increasing every year since 2012.

Caló des Moro is one of Mallorca's best kept secret beaches, that everyone knows about. For a long time, this tiny stretch of fine white sand and translucent turquoise blue water was relatively unknown because of the difficulty in reaching it, but lately, the word has spread and this unspoilt beach can now become very crowded in the summer months. Located on the southeast of the island, about six kilometres from the town of Santanyi, Cala des Moro is popular with locals and now with tourists, particularly Germans, who appreciate the adventure of getting there and its impressive beauty.

The beach is about 40-metres long and the sea stretches far out between steep cliffs. The beach is surrounded by pine trees and low-lying scrubs and plants.

Cala s’Almunia is a very small town consisting of just 30-40 houses. It’s not far from the southern tip of Mallorca, and the closest major town is Santanyi 5 kilometers to the north

The beach in Cala s’Almunia shares its name with the village, but is also called Es Maquer. It is incredibly beautifully situated in a rocky bay surrounded by pine trees.

The small beach is just 10 meters long and 30 meters wide. There are a few rocky outcroppings on the beach itself, but there are also areas of sand/gravel. During certain periods, however, there is hardly any sand on the beach. The water is crystal clear and very inviting for swimming.


A path leads from the more popular beach of Calo des Moro to Cala s’Almunia. The path continues to the southern tip of Mallorca, Cap de Ses Salines. The entire trip is about 8 kilometers long and takes three hours on foot.

Ca’n Pastilla is located a little ways outside the capital of Palma de Mallorca. Although the town is located only a few kilometres from the airport, the flight traffic is not a significant nuisance.

One of the really good beachside hotels is JS Palma Stay, where you will be met with bright rooms, a beautiful restaurant, a real pool bar (in the pool), and free WiFi.

Playa Ca’n Pastilla lies in the middle of the bay by the name of Bahia de Palma. It makes up the first section of the 5-kilometre long sand beach than runs all the way from Ca’n Pastilla to S’Arenal.

The beach is at its widest at Ca’n Pastilla and covered entirely in fine, white sand. The water takes a while to deepen and the bay offers solid protection against waves.
