What would happen to our understanding of student exchange and international education more broadly if we examined it through the disciplinary lenses of history, foreign relations, and anthropology? Education for global citizenship and global competency is often described as an inevitable and necessary response to life in a globalized world. But since the early twentieth century, student exchange has been an enterprise deeply embedded in the politics of America’s relationship to the world. This presentation will identify some of the major ethical dilemmas posed by the ways in which international education has functioned historically and continues to function today as a vector of U.S. foreign relations. In doing so, the goal is to not to censure those who seek international experiences, but rather to bestow these young people with the information they need to proceed with agency and clarity.
