What to See on Marstrand

A traveller's Experience Shared here
Marstrand is also 1h 45 minutes from Strömstad and only 50 minutes from Gothenburg by car. This would be our penultimate destination and our last accommodation before heading to the Landvetter airport to return the car and return home.

The arrival at Marstrand is a dream landscape. Unfortunately I was driving and I could not capture it with my camera but with my retina: a road winding between villages, tiny peninsulas and bridges on island, after island, after island. So it is until you reach the fifth island, Koön, where the road ends and only a ferry lets you visit the island Marstrandsön where the Carlsten Fortress is located.
We took the ferry and we went to visit the fortress and take a walk along the nature trails of Marstrand while we saw the magnificent landscape of the west coast that the day partly sunny partly cloudy offered us.
Special mention deserves the hotel Marstrand Havshotell where we stayed overnight. Later in the article I discuss the hotels for this trip but this is sensational. A typical sailor hotel with spa and rooms as I like them: modern.

Travellers Reviews :

* This is one of the best towns in the Swedish westcoast. The island of Marstrand is a supernice island with almost no cars on. You park your car and take a ferry for 5 min to get there. Dont miss the castle Carlstensfästning and the nice pathes around the island.

* Marstrand is a place you should not miss if you are on the West Coast.
You park your car, take the ferry crossing a couple of hundreds of metres of water, and you are on a beautiful island, with enough to spend an evening or two, and breath taking views over the surroundings.
The castle is also worth a visit.
You find places to take a swim all around.

* This island is beautiful! Dont get stuck in the harbor for the small shops, but walk around the island. There is an amazing landscape both against the ocean and within the nature. Make sure you put on some great walking shoes and take a picknick bag with you or eat at any of the lovely restaurants on the island after the trip.

If you have some time over you may also want to visit the magnificent fortress!

* Amazing, relaxing place
I have been in Marstrand by bus coming from Goteborg. the town is nice, quite and cool. Have a relaxing walk next to the see and walk around the island, on the rocks, discovering amazing places. After a walk you can eat looking at the typical nordic landscape. Colors in summer are magical. Marstrand is a must-see town, no doubt

* You cannot beat Marstrand in the summer, the Island is car free, and Marstrand itself is a mecca for sailing. Marstrands Havshotel is the best hotel to stay at right by the ferry. Take the day exploring the island - Walk around it, go swimming in the salty sea, and take a coffee and a cinnamon bun at Bergs Konditori.

The history of Marstrand goes long back to Napolean times when goods were shipped through it and to Europe. Carlstens castle is really a beautiful sight and has lots of interesting stories. I recommend going on the guided tour with the Commandant of the castle. Overall this is really a fantastic pearl to be descovered in the Oyster of the Bohus coast. You will love this, I promise you (try to go when the weather is good for the best experience).
