A beautiful sighting in Kruger National Park as three impalas gather together for a drink, each positioned differently around the water.
An impala ewe drinks with a yellow-billed oxpecker perched comfortably on her back, while a mature impala ram stands beside her facing directly toward us. The third impala has its back toward our open safari vehicle as the small group quietly enjoys the water.
Yellow-billed oxpeckers regularly use impalas and other large mammals as mobile feeding platforms, searching their coats for ticks and other parasites. The birds gain a reliable food source while their hosts can benefit from the removal of some external parasites.
Even while drinking, impalas remain highly alert. Lowering their heads to the water temporarily reduces their ability to watch for danger, so animals within the group frequently look in different directions to help detect approaching predators.
A peaceful scene showcasing the everyday relationships and constant vigilance that are part of life in the African bush.
Filmed on safari in Kruger National Park with KPS Safaris & Tours.
