A rare color variation of the lion, specifically the Southern African lion, is the white lion. Although the first sighting of a white lion in the Timbavati area of South Africa was in 1938, it is believed that these lions have lived there naturally for centuries. The book "The White Lions of Timbavati" introduced white lions to the English-speaking world for the first time in 1977.
