Katie and her fiance Liam live in this 430-square-foot apartment in Toronto, a colourful, personality-filled home that proves small and rented spaces can still feel creative and unique. Thye’ve transformed every room through renter-friendly DIYs, budget-conscious upgrades, and small-space design choices that make the apartment both functional and reflective of the couple. Some of their favorite projects include a removable butcher block-look countertop, terra-cotta painted kitchen floor tiles, renter-friendly bathroom vanity and medicine cabinet makeovers, faux stained glass and frosted window treatments, custom shelving, an air conditioner cover, a ceiling lamp, removable wallpaper and brick panelling, and renter-friendly balcony flooring. They’ve maximized storage and functionality through multi-functional furniture with hidden storage, creative solutions for awkward spaces, and lots of shelving and vertical storage to make their home feel open rather than crowded. They’ve embraced small-space living and decorating on a budget as an opportunity to be more creative through colour, art, organic textures, handmade details, and thrifted decor.
