Pakistan PM calls for 'equitable access' to education for girls at conference | ABS-CBN News

Pakistan kicked off a conference on women's education on Saturday (January 11) with prime minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirming the nation’s commitment to promoting girls’ education and gender equality.

The two-day event titled "Girls’ Education in Muslim Communities: Challenges and Opportunities" is being held in Islamabad and will feature Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai speaking as the guest of honour on Sunday (January 12).

Shehbaz delivered the keynote address at the opening session on Saturday and said "denying education to girls tantamount to denying their voices or their choice, while depriving them of their rights to a bright future."

The event is expected to bring together over 150 international dignitaries, including ministers, ambassadors, scholars and academia from 44 Muslim and friendly countries, as well as representatives from international organisations including UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank.
The conference will conclude by a formal signing ceremony of the Islamabad Declaration, outlining the shared commitment of the Muslim community to empower girls through education.
